This tutorial will give students the practical skills necessary for designing and building smart sensors. We will begin with a summary of basic electronics and a survey of various sensor types and technologies. We will then introduce microcontrollers as the key building blocks for modern sensor systems. Microcontroller use naturally involves software-based data acquisition and control and we will introduce the use of the compact versions of C++ or python programming languages needed for this purpose. Finally, the sensors become smart by performing data analysis and inference within the sensor system itself using tiny machine learning or AI techniques. During the tutorial we will design and build and program our own smart sensors using inexpensive consumer-grade electronics parts along with our own laptop computers. Be prepared to use your hands and minds and make mistakes and to participate by freely asking questions and making suggestions.
